How In the Detail collects, uses and protects your personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).

Last updated: 7 July 2026

1. Who we are

In the Detail (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an interior design studio based in Cape Town, South Africa. For the purposes of POPIA, we are the “responsible party” that determines why and how your personal information is processed.

  • Responsible party: In the Detail [insert registered legal/trading name]
  • Registration number (if applicable): [insert company/entity registration number]
  • Physical & postal address: [insert business address], Cape Town, South Africa
  • Information Officer: [insert name — e.g. Caron] — caron@inthedetail.co.za

2. What personal information we collect

We only collect the personal information you choose to give us when you get in touch. This may include:

  • Your name;
  • Your email address;
  • Your phone number;
  • Your preferred contact method; and
  • Any details you include in your message about your project or enquiry.

We do not collect special personal information (such as health, race, or financial information), and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

3. How we collect your information

Personal information is collected directly from you when you:

  • Complete the enquiry form on our Contact page. This form opens your own email application with the details pre-filled — your information is sent to us as an email and is not stored in a database or on this website;
  • Email or call us directly; or
  • Message us via WhatsApp using the buttons provided on the site.

Providing your information is voluntary. However, if you do not provide it, we may not be able to respond to your enquiry or provide our services.

4. Why we use your information (purpose)

We process your personal information only to:

  • Respond to your enquiry and communicate with you;
  • Provide, quote for, and carry out interior design services you request;
  • Keep records of our correspondence with you; and
  • Comply with our legal obligations.

We rely on your consent, and/or the need to take steps at your request before entering into and performing an agreement with you, as the lawful basis for this processing. We will not use your information for a new, unrelated purpose without your consent unless the law permits it.

5. When we share your information

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. We do not share it with third parties for marketing. Your information may be handled by:

  • Our email provider, when your enquiry reaches our inbox; and
  • WhatsApp (Meta Platforms) if you choose to contact us that way, subject to their own privacy terms.

Where we ever engage a service provider (operator) that processes personal information on our behalf, we require them to keep it secure and to process it only on our instructions.

6. Cookies and tracking

This website does not use advertising or third-party analytics/tracking cookies, and it does not build profiles of visitors. Fonts are served directly from this website, so your browser does not make external font requests. Only strictly necessary technology required for the site to function may be used.

7. How we keep your information safe

We take reasonable and appropriate technical and organisational measures to safeguard your personal information against loss, unauthorised access and misuse, as required by POPIA. Because enquiries reach us by email, they are protected by the security controls of our email accounts. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure, but we act promptly if we become aware of any compromise and will notify you and the Information Regulator where the law requires.

8. How long we keep it

We keep your personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purpose it was collected for, to maintain our business records, and to meet any legal requirements. When it is no longer needed, we securely delete or de-identify it.

9. Cross-border transfers

We aim to keep your information within South Africa. If you contact us through WhatsApp, that communication is handled by Meta and may be processed outside South Africa under safeguards that provide an adequate level of protection, as contemplated by POPIA.

10. Your rights under POPIA

As a data subject, you have the right to:

  • Ask whether we hold personal information about you, and request access to it;
  • Request that we correct or delete information that is inaccurate or out of date;
  • Object, on reasonable grounds, to the processing of your information;
  • Withdraw your consent at any time (this will not affect processing already carried out); and
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact our Information Officer at caron@inthedetail.co.za. We will respond within a reasonable time.

11. Complaints to the Information Regulator

If you believe we have not handled your personal information lawfully, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa):

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be available on this page, with the “Last updated” date at the top reflecting the most recent change.
